SLIPPING HIS HAND into the front pocket of his tight jeans, Crew inched several quarters out and laid them on the wooden ledge fronting the shooting gallery. He picked up the rifle, then nodded to the attendant behind the counter who started up a line of little wooden duck targets. Crew took aim as they sailed past and won the panda bear Alexia craved on the first try, much to the attendant’s chagrin.

Settling the panda bear in Alexia’s arms, he said, “Now we can discuss just how you’re going to reward me for winning this for you.”

“A gentleman wouldn’t ask for a reward.”

Crew just looked at her.

“Okay, I’ll let you choose what we do next,” she offered.

“Great idea,” he said, his eyes sparkling with sensual fire.

“Uh-uh,” she said, shaking her head. “It has to be something in the amusement park.”

His eyes continued to sparkle nonetheless.

“And not the Tunnel of Love, either,” she added, correctly guessing the direction of his thoughts.

“Spoilsport.” He thought a moment then said, “Okay, follow me” as he took her hand.

She grumbled, but allowed him to lead as she followed in his wake until they came to his intended destination at the end of the midway.

“Bumper cars! I’m not getting in one of those. Oh, no, I’m not. Do you hear me, Crew Harper?”

“Aw, come on, Alexia. For once let down your guard and allow yourself to have some fun,” he coaxed, the teasing light back in his eyes.

She could see there was nothing she could do but go along with what he wanted and ride the bumper cars. He could be the most stubborn human on earth sometimes, she thought. Glaring at him she said, “And what am I supposed to do with this stupid bear if I did get in one of the cars?” she asked, imperiously nodding to the panda he’d won her.

“I’ll take care of the bear,” Crew promised, lifting it from her hands and covering its ears. “You’re not stupid,” he said soothingly to the bear while pretending a chastising look at Alexia. “Don’t pay her no mind, bear. She’s just frustrated. What she needs is …” He deliberately didn’t finish the sentence Alexia was straining to hear as he headed for the ticket booth.

When he came back, he presented the ride attendant with three tickets and plopped the panda bear in a separate bumper car of its own to her astonishment and the delight of a watching youngster in pigtails.

Crew took the bumper car behind Alexia’s. When the ride started, he began nudging Alexia’s car from behind. From the corner of her eye, she could see the little girl giggling while she tried to bump her car into the bumper car containing the panda bear.

She was distracted from watching the child by a jolt to her own car that sent her sailing. “All right, I’ve had it with you, Crew Harper,” she vowed under her breath. “You want a fight, you’ve got one.” Turning her bumper car around when it came to a stop, she headed straight for Crew at full speed, her eyes filled with childish glee.
